SAME-OC Receives 2013 Streamer Awards

Kleinfelder Selected for Seymour S. Greenfield Award

KleinfelderKleinfelder is pleased to announce being selected for the prestigious Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Seymour S. Greenfield Sustaining Member Award for 2012. This award is based on Kleinfelder’s nationwide support to SAME where the firm actively participates both on a national level and in 16 local Posts promoting Young Members participation, mentoring programs, and K-12 and college outreach. Kleinfelder’s SAME participants include one Fellow, nine current Post officers (including 4 current or past Post presidents), and active participation in SAME National committees including the Warrior Transition Task Force and the leadership of the 2013 JETC conference. Kleinfelder staff looks forward to celebrating the receipt of this prestigious award with SAME colleagues at the SAME JETC in San Diego, May 21-24.

SAME-OC Awards 5 Scholarships

The SAME Orange County Post, in its mission to support and promote the educational and professional development of present and potential future engineers, awarded five scholarships to engineering students from the University of California, Irvine at a luncheon on October 11, 2012. Al Moro, Executive Director for the Port of Long Beach presided and presented a book to the recipients on the history of the port. Each scholarship was in the amount of $2,500 and was open to all engineering disciplines. Applicants had to be a Junior or Senior as of fall 2012 and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Criteria for the scholarship included Academic Performance, Financial Need, Professional Involvement, Community Involvement and Work Experience.

The SAME Orange County Post would like to recognize the following students for their outstanding academic success as well as their community and professional contributions:

Mr. Andrew Baca is a Senior in Structural Engineering with a 3.5 GPA. He is President of the Latino Business Association (LBSA) and past recipient of the Most Valuable Member Award from the Orange County Hispanic Youth Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Joseph Bell is a Junior in Mechanical Engineering with a 3.4 GPA. He is a Member of the National Association of Black Engineers (NSBE) and is a mentor for Summer Engineering for Kids (SEEK).

Ms. Mary Danielson is a Senior in Civil Engineering with a 3.2 GPA. She is Vice President of the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society and an intern at the Eastern Municipal Water District. Ms. Danielson is also a recipient of the J. Thomas Miles Memorial Scholarship established in 2004 in recognition of Mr. J. Thomas Miles, P.E., a visionary leader in the field of civil and environmental engineering and an integral component to the success and growth of the SAME Orange County Post.

Mr. Charles Smith is a Senior in Mechanical Engineering. He is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and is married with two children. Mr. Smith volunteers his time for community beach clean-ups and is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Ms. Jacqueline Thomas is a Senior in Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering and currently maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is Vice President External for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and a member of the UCI Design/Build Fly Team.

Premier Federal Business Opportunities Symposium Staged in Southern California- November 8th, 2012

Another exceptional, well attended event was facilitated by the SAME-Orange County Post on November 8th, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency in Orange County.

The Symposium encourages dialog and the development of connections between the engineering industry and Federal entities.

The theme of “Changing Times: Future Opportunities and Challenges” was addressed by an impressive group of speakers.

John Coon, NAVFAC Southwest Chief Engineer, Capital Improvement Business Line Manager kicked off the event discussing upcoming capital improvement projects followed by Lawrence Lansdale, Navy BRAC-PMO Environmental Director expanding on the new directions being taken in the BRAC Program. An update on acquisition strategies and upcoming solicitations presented by Derral VanWinkle, Environmental Restoration Program Manager, NAVFAC SW was well received by the audience.

Joseph Calcara, Director of Programs, South Pacific Division of the Army Corps of Engineers elaborated on specific opportunities with the USACE SPD in the coming year. Followed by Valerie Martinez, President/ CEO of a SC communication company discussed in detail the High Speed Rail (HSR), a $65 Billion project and the participation goal of 30% for small businesses.

“From Stimulus to Sequestration- Where are we headed?” was the topic for the Keynote Panel comprised of Capt. Clifford M. Maurer, CEC, Commanding Officer, NAVFAC SW, and Joseph F. Calcara, USACE. The moderator, Michael Giorgione, Rear Admiral, CEC, USN (Ret.) facilitated a lively discussion.

The Organizing Committee, led by Ms. Sharon Bison of SCS Engineers, was very pleased with the level of sponsorships and attendees, and gave Veterans Outreach Awards to the following firms; Chambers Group, IO Environmental and Infrastructure, SAIC and URS. A brief company presentation was made by our Gold Sponsor, Stronghold Engineering. Vida Wright, SAME Regional Vice President provided a brief update on the region and SAME National and participated in presentation of donations to SAME-OC charities, the American Cancer Society and Semper Fi, supporters of the families of wounded warriors.

SAME-OC Hosts First Young Member Luncheon

On Monday, March 12, SAME OC hosted our first Young Member luncheon event at Kleinfelder's offices entitled "SAME 101". All SAME OC young members were invited to join for a brief history lesson/presentation of SAME. Information was presented by Mr. Jeff Davis, Immediate Past President of SAME-OC. An informal Q&A session followed and young members asked what the benefits of SAME were, what they can do to get more involved and what some acronyms were. Additional young member events are in the works - your suggestions are welcome and should be sent to Andrew Young at andrew.young @ alizacorp.com.

Streamers are a way for individual SAME posts to receive national recognition from SAME for their efforts in a variety of categories. The Orange County Post submitted their Awards Streamer outline of accomplishments to SAME Headquarters in Washington, DC.
